HOLE-IN-ONE GIVES OMAR SANDYS THE LEAD 15 February 2008 – It was a hole-in-one on the opening day of the Vodacom Championship held at the Pretoria Country Club yesterday which gave Omar Sandys the one stroke lead.
Due to bad light, Sandys play was postponed for two hours. Sandys closed off his first round with a six-under 66, leading some top players, all on 68, namely Mrk Murless, Clinton Whitelaw, and Adilson da Silva, to mention a few. Sandys hole-in-one occurred on the par-3 eighth, where the South African watched from close range how his ball pleasantly dropped into the hole. "I hit it slightly right of the hole and it pitched at the back of the pin," explained Sandys. "It spun back to the pin and stopped half-an-inch in front of the hole. I got to the green, repaired my pitch mark, and when I took the putter from my caddie the ball rolled in." Sandys managed to score four birdies, with a bogey on the 13th hole being his only real mistake. Three players named best of the amateurs were Adrian Ford, on level par 72, with Dylan Fritelli on 75, and Ruan Botha on 80, following closely behind. |
